What changed
Shopify raised the yearly-billed price of its Grow plan from $79 to $89 per month and Advanced from $299 to $359 per month. Monthly-billed pricing and the Basic plan are unchanged, so the increase applies only to merchants paying annually.
Why it matters
For merchants who pay annually, the discount for committing to a year is now smaller: Grow's yearly rate of $89/mo sits closer to its $105 monthly rate than the old $79 did. Monthly billing and the Basic plan are unchanged. Watch whether Shopify extends the increase to monthly billing or Basic next, and whether more of October's price-raising vendors follow with further hikes.
In context
Update, Oct 16: the next day's capture showed annual Grow back at $79/mo and Advanced at $299/mo, and Pulse now treats the $89 and $359 prices as one arm of a likely A/B test rather than a settled increase. Shopify's yearly-billed Grow and Advanced tiers haven't moved since the company's only other price increase, the 15% hike to Plus's starting price in April 2024. This one lands 13 days after Shopify dropped Shopify Plus's 1% sales cashback cap, and a few months after it dropped the 25% savings callout from annual billing — both of which took something away from Shopify's plans. On Oct 12, Intercom, Hover and Together all raised their own prices too, part of the 63 price increases the index has tracked across 57 companies in the last 180 days. Price increases are still a minority move — just 3.7% of all changes tracked in that window — which makes Shopify's annual-only increase worth watching for whether it spreads to monthly billing next.
