Xai retires SuperGrok, rebuilds Grok pricing around Cursor and usage multiples

Xai retired its SuperGrok Lite/SuperGrok/SuperGrok Plus/SuperGrok Heavy/Business lineup and replaced it with Free, Plus ($8/month), Premium ($30/month), Super ($100/month) and Ultra ($200/month) individual plans plus a per-seat Teams plan at $30+/user; Enterprise stays custom-priced.

WHY IT MATTERS

The bundle signals Xai is repositioning Grok as infrastructure for AI coding workflows rather than just a chat subscription, wiring Cursor-style agent and code-hosting features directly into its own pricing tiers. The usage-multiple framing, pegged to Plus as the baseline, also gives Xai a cleaner way to add tiers above or below it without relabeling the whole ladder again. Watch whether its next change, whenever it lands, is another model upgrade — its usual move — or a second iteration on this Cursor-integrated structure.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • First pricing restructure since tracking began Aug 10, 2026
  • Just 2 changes in the last 90 days; average cadence about 57 days
  • Previous change: Aug 17, 2026, a Grok 4.6 model upgrade, 57 days earlier
  • 13.7% of changes in the last 180 days were restructures (238 of 1,740)

THEIR RATIONALE

This is Xai's first pricing restructure since tracking began Aug 10, 2026; it has made just 2 changes in the last 90 days, this one landing 57 days after the previous one — a model upgrade that moved SuperGrok to Grok 4.6, not a repricing. Pairing the restructure with a Cursor integration across every tier (agent access, cloud agents, code hosting via Origin, Bugbot reviews) and a shift to usage-multiple framing (4x, 15x, 50x, pooled) suggests Xai is positioning Grok less as a standalone chatbot subscription and more as a companion platform for AI coding and agent workflows.

THE SIGNAL

Pricing restructures aren't rare across the index — 204 companies made one in the last 180 days, 13.7% of all 1,740 tracked changes, with Vercel, Lyzr, Katalon, Anthropic and DeepSeek doing it most often. But this is the first time the pattern has shown up in Xai's own change history, and it arrives as a full package: a repriced tier ladder, a named Cursor integration baked into every plan, and a new usage-multiple framing replacing the old 'higher rate limits' language in one diff. That's a much bigger single move than Xai's usual pace of roughly one change every 57 days.

IN CONTEXT

Xai's pricing had been quiet until now — its only other tracked move was an August model upgrade that boosted SuperGrok to Grok 4.6, not a repricing. Restructures are common elsewhere: 204 companies did one in the last 180 days, with Vercel, Lyzr, Katalon, Anthropic and DeepSeek the most frequent, and recent examples include Bird's move to wallet billing and Gitbook's Premium-to-Essential rename. What stands out here is the scope: Xai didn't just rename and reprice its tiers, it rewired the whole ladder around usage multiples and folded in a Cursor integration at the same time — a far bigger step than its usual pace of one change roughly every 57 days.

Already paying for SuperGrok, Cursor or X Premium? Don't sign up again. Link your accounts first: https://cursor.com/unify That's the "Combine accounts" button on xAI's own announcement. It links X, Grok and Cursor, recommends a plan from what you already have, and refunds the unused part of your old plans. Before you pick one, divide every plan by its price: Plus $8, 1x usage. Baseline. Premium $30, 4x. 1.07x per dollar. Super $100, 15x. 1.2x per dollar. Ultra $200, 50x. 2x per dollar. Only Ultra really pulls ahead. Super to Ultra is another $100 for 35x more, more than Super's whole allowance. Three things to know: 1. It's one weekly pool. Grok chat, Imagine, Voice, Grok Bot and Cursor all share it. An hourly Grok Bot routine now spends the same usage as your coding. 2. Claude and GPT in Cursor are no longer included. They're top-ups at API list price, Premium and up. If that's what you code with, keep your current plan for now. 3. You don't have to switch. Your old plan and its included third-party usage stay until you do. Plans:

Confused about whether to switch from Supergrok Heavy to the new Ultra Plan? Me too. Switching from SuperGrok Heavy ($300/mo) to the new Ultra plan ($200/mo) on The X Subscription is optional. Existing SuperGrok Heavy subscribers can keep their current plan, price, and features indefinitely for now (xAI says it will eventually migrate remaining customers, with advance notice, but no timeline yet). Switching cancels the old plan and gives a prorated refund for unused time. What you give up The main exclusive feature of SuperGrok Heavy is the multi-agent / “larger team of agents” (Heavy) mode for the hardest problems — a larger collaborative team of agents working on each answer. Recent official responses indicate this multi-agent mode for the hardest problems remains exclusive to legacy SuperGrok Heavy and is not part of Ultra. Heavy also specifically listed dedicated support + early access. Ultra has priority support and the strongest “earliest access to all products and models,” but the dedicated support channel tied to the old Heavy tier is the one you lose if you switch. Everything else on Heavy (highest relative usage in the old system, Grok Bot, Imagine/video, X Premium+ included when linked, etc.) is covered or exceeded in the new structure. What you get on Ultra instead $100/mo cheaper ($200 vs $300). 50x the Plus base weekly usage pool (shared across Grok Chat/Imagine/Voice/Bot, Cursor, etc.). Official messaging says comparable new tiers deliver more usage-per-dollar than the plans they replace. Full Cursor benefits (coding agents, cloud agents, etc.) in the same plan and shared pool. Full X Premium+ benefits (ad-free on most surfaces, checkmark, highest reply boost, Radar, Articles, creator tools, etc.). Priority model access at peak times, fastest responses/generations, and earliest access to new products and models. Grok Bot, latest models, video generation, and the rest of the Premium/Super feature set. Ultra is positioned as the new top consumer tier that maps to the old Heavy role, with better economics and the Cursor integration built in. The shared pool means unused Grok usage can go to Cursor (or vice versa). Bottom line Stay on SuperGrok Heavy if you specifically rely on the multi-agent “Team of Experts” mode for extremely hard problems, or if you value the dedicated support that came with it. Switch to Ultra if high overall volume (chat, bots, images/video, coding), Cursor integration, X perks, earliest access, and better value matter more to you — you save $100/mo and get a large quantified shared pool. Check your account’s billing settings (or the unify flow at https://t.co/6R6AArSoCR) for the exact switch option, any limited-time offers, and current feature mapping, as details can vary by account and the rollout is still new (launched ~October 12, 2026). Switching is one-way for the old plan. I will be sticking with Heavy until the dust settles.
