PACKAGING CHANGE

Shopify Plus bundles 20 free POS Pro locations, killing the per-location tax

Shopify Plus now includes 20 POS Pro locations at no additional cost, up from zero included locations previously.

WHY IT MATTERS

The move raises the bar for POS competitors that monetize per-location or per-register, since Shopify Plus merchants can now scale to 20 physical sites without incremental software cost, only paying past that threshold. It also strengthens Plus as a retention play for growing multi-location retailers who might otherwise shop around once their location count made per-site fees material. Watch whether Toast, Lightspeed, or Square respond with their own location-bundling moves, and whether Shopify raises the 20-location cap further or extends a smaller bundled allotment to its non-Plus tiers.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Shopify Plus now includes 20 POS Pro locations at no additional cost, up from zero included locations previously
  • Merchants who need more than 20 locations still pay the unchanged per-location rate of $89/mo for each additional site beyond the allotment

THEIR RATIONALE

Shopify frames the move as removing a cost barrier for multi-location retailers running physical stores alongside their online business, positioning Plus as the default plan for chains rather than a tier that gets taxed per register. The change targets merchants who were previously absorbing $89/mo per location as a recurring line item, making the enterprise tier's total cost of ownership more predictable for larger footprints.

THE SIGNAL

This isn't a discount so much as a repackaging: a previously metered, à la carte cost (per-location POS access) gets folded into a flat subscription tier, which is the same seat-to-usage bundling pattern showing up across SaaS, applied here to physical retail footprint instead of software seats. For a platform competing with Square, Lightspeed, and Toast, all of which still charge incrementally for additional registers or locations, bundling 20 locations in removes a recurring cost that scaled against a merchant's success (opening more stores), which is exactly the kind of usage-penalizing pricing vendors are under pressure to eliminate.

First 20 POS Pro locations included (yes, TWENTY). Up to 100 themes in your account (for when you can't decide if you want blue or slightly darker blue).

Exactly. Only reason to switch to plus is if you can save more on monthly processing fees than the cost difference between advanced and plus. I will say the customer service is better and more prompt on Plus. A few tools like Audiences are nice. Also the PoS pro subscription is free and included. But definitely not worth paying for without the sales volume to utilize the lower CC fees.

If you’re doing $1M online then Shopify Plus is absolutely worth considering. Take into account the lower transaction rate and that Shopify POS Pro is included for unlimited locations for the same price. For us, this amounts to $700-$800 per month in savings alone so in reality the move to Plus is only about $1,200 per month. And with Plus, you can scale very easily so that investment makes even more sense sooner.
