OpenAI moves Free and Go chats to GPT-6, rewrites plan taglines

OpenAI's Free and Go plans now list 'Unlimited text chats with GPT-6,' replacing the prior GPT-5.6 Luna reference.

WHY IT MATTERS

The daily tagline rewrites are noise, but the GPT-6 rollout to Free and Go is the real move — it narrows the gap between what free and paid users see on frontier-model naming, even as usage limits keep differentiating the tiers. Watch whether OpenAI's taglines settle now that this messaging round appears to be wrapping up, and whether Plus and Pro get a comparable model bump next.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • 6th tagline rewrite since mid-September; 2nd straight day of changes
  • Free/Go moved to GPT-6, 32 days after GPT-6 Astra reached Plus/Pro
  • 15 of 88 tracked OpenAI events are positioning changes, its most common type
  • Prices unchanged: Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100/month

THEIR RATIONALE

This is OpenAI's second consecutive daily change — yesterday's update also reworded Free, Go, Plus and Pro taglines with no price or feature change. OpenAI has now rewritten these taglines six times since mid-September alone, making positioning changes its single most common event type (15 of 88 tracked events), well ahead of actual feature or price moves. The company appears to be iterating on messaging almost daily, more consistent with live copy testing than a deliberate repositioning campaign.

THE SIGNAL

Underneath the now-routine tagline churn sits a real model swap: Free and Go's unlimited tier moves off GPT-5.6 Luna onto GPT-6, rolling the flagship-generation model out to the no-cost tier just over a month after GPT-6 Astra arrived for Plus and Pro reasoning in September. That's a notably fast trickle-down of frontier-model naming into the free tier. The timing also lines up with Perplexity, which swapped a model in its own lineup the same day — a reminder that model-forward pricing pages are now being tuned on a near-daily cadence across the category.

IN CONTEXT

OpenAI has now reworded its plan taglines six times since mid-September, including yesterday's rewrite and a persona-based 'Best for' pass in late September — positioning changes are its most common event type on record (15 of 88). The substantive move inside today's update is the model swap: Free and Go's unlimited tier moves from GPT-5.6 Luna to GPT-6, arriving just 32 days after GPT-6 Astra landed for Plus and Pro reasoning. That's a fast trickle-down of the current model generation into the free tier, timed alongside Perplexity's own model-lineup swap today — a reminder that model-forward pricing pages are now tuned on a near-daily cadence across the category.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

@Lyphoxtwitter

OpenAI says GPT-6 is now "for everyone". Read the availability note: Plus and Pro get GPT-6 Sol, Free users get GPT-6 Luna. Same name, two different models. And Codex doesn't change at all. "Everyone" turns out to be a tier, not a promise.

This is your best update in last 2 years. Move towards dynamic UIs that adapt to whatever the user needs is the future. It will remove so many SaaS companies from the market.

The real shift isn’t just GPT-6 getting smarter. It’s the interface finally catching up with the intelligence behind it. Once AI can decide whether an answer should be text, a chart, a tool, a form, or an interactive experience, the old “chatbot” concept starts to disappear.
